How to play DMZ in Modern Warfare 4
DMZ is an extraction shooter: infiltrate the Hajin Exclusion Zone with up to two squadmates, complete story missions and dynamic operations while fighting AI and up to 19 other squads, then extract alive — by Twin Heli helicopter, Fulton balloon or flare — with whatever you can carry. What you extract is yours; what you lose, is gone.

The core loop
- Prepare between runs. Your FOB (forward operating base) is the persistent layer: stash, upgrades, crafting and traits all feed your next deployment. Weapon slots include insured slots, so a lucky gun can come back with you.
- Infiltrate. Queue solo, duo or trio — 20 squads of three share Hajin. Solo players are matched primarily with other solos.
- Work contracts. Story missions advance the narrative; mission orders and dynamic operations keep runs unpredictable. AI forces scale with where you go — check a POI's threat level before committing.
- Loot with intent. Weapons, armor, ammo and valuables are everywhere, but the seven fortresses and Extreme zones (Air Base Bunker, Nenshin Tech Complex) hold the top tier — guarded accordingly.
- Extract. Twin Heli, Fulton balloon and flare exfils get you out; the run only counts if you're on it. Extraction intel lives in our exfil guide.
Five tips for your first run
- Land somewhere calm — Cheongun Village, Songdo Wharf or Mirae General Hospital are the official Low-threat picks.
- Watch the compass: each location shows its threat level as you enter, and it rises as you fight.
- Take the first clean exfil. A small successful run beats a big dead one — you keep everything.
- Don't push a fortress (High/Critical) without armor plates and a plan.
- Read the death recap — threat, ambushes and AI elites all telegraph before they kill you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the goal in DMZ?
Deploy into the Hajin Exclusion Zone, complete contracts and missions, gather loot — and get out alive. Anything you extract (weapons, valuables, mission items) is yours to keep or stash; dying in the zone loses what you carried in.
How long is a DMZ match?
A deployment is a single infiltration-extraction cycle rather than a timed round — you choose when to leave via an exfil point. Expect roughly 20–40 minutes per run depending on your objectives.
Can you play DMZ solo in MW4?
Yes — solo, duo or trio. Infinity Ward has said solo players who queue alone are primarily matched against other solos.
What is FOB progression?
Your Forward Operating Base is your persistent home between deployments — upgrades, stash and crafting feed into it, so progress carries over even from runs where you don't extract.
